6-Chloro-3-indolyl 1,3-diacetate CAS 108761-33-7  is used as a chromogenic substrate for detection of bacteria. It reacts with specific enzymes in the bacterial cell wall to produce a red or pink color. It is also used as a diagnostic tool to identify bacteria and has been shown to be excreted in urine.
